Volkswagen Shark Cage
Volkswagen is going to take a big bite out of the 25th anniversary of Shark Week on the Discovery Channel this year.
Instead of the usual jail-like shark cage, VW had a "Volkswagen Beetle Shark Observation Cage" created. It's looks like how it sounds, metal bars looking just like the outline of the new Beetle turned into a shark cage, complete with wheels.
As product plants on reality television goes, this one is about as blatant as it gets. But it's sure to bring smiles, from both viewers and sharks. You can't see it until Shark Week begins Aug. 12.
"Shark Week has a loyal and enthusiastic following of fans, and we're thrilled to partner with Discovery Channel on this 25th anniversary special," said Justin Osborne, general manager for marketing communications at Volkswagen of America.
To play up the connection, VW is offering a custom "Shark Bites" video playlist and timeline photos for its Facebook page.

Lobster Rescue
A massive 17-pound, 80-year-old lobster that could have ended up on a lunch plate recently got released back into Long Island Sound thanks to the crustacean compassion of Don MacKenzie of Niantic, Connecticut.
"This lobster has seen World War I, World War II, seen the landing on the moon and the Red Sox win the World Series, he's made it this far in life," MacKenzie told the local paper. "He deserves to live."
Local kids who had been flocking to the restaurant's tank to check out the impressive creature had named him "Larry." Word soon circulated that his number was up and had been ordered for a feast. MacKenzie swooped in, outbid the eater, and set Larry free while those local kids chanted "Let Larry Live!" The lobster was deposited in an area of the Long Island Sound where draggers can't drop their nets where he'll likely be able to live out the rest of his bottom feeding days in peace.
