UBoat found off Natucket

U-550 World War II German Submarine Found Off Massachusetts Coast

redOrbit Staff & Wire Reports – Your Universe Online
Seven decades after it was sunk during a battle in waters off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, a team of divers located a World War II era German u-boat last Monday, various media outlets have reported.
According to Jay Lindsay of the Associated Press (AP), an expedition organized by New Jersey lawyer Joe Mazraani found the U-550 in their second trip to the site.
Using side-scan sonar, the seven man team, several of whom had reportedly spent 20 years trying to track down the missing 252-foot submarine, located it in deep water 70 miles south of Nantucket, sonar operator Garry Kozak told members of the media.
“The U-550 was cruising off the east coast of the United States back on  April 16, 1944, when it torpedoed the gasoline tanker SS Pan Pennsylvania,” TG Daily‘s Trent Nouveau explained. “The Pennsylvania was headed to the UK with 140,000 barrels of gasoline, along with a protective convoy of three ships — the USS Joyce, USS Gandy and USS Peterson.”
“Although the U-boat attempted to evade detection by concealing itself under the sinking freighter, sailors on the USS Joyce managed to identify the German vessel and damage it by dropping depth charges,” he added. “Forced to surface, the U-550 fired its deck guns at the American ships, while the USS Gandy returned fire and rammed the U-boat. The USS Peterson subsequently struck the submarine with two additional depth charges, forcing the German crew to abandon ship — but not before scuttling the U-boat with explosive charges.”
There were 44 casualties and 12 survivors of the conflict, and the u-boat itself sank into the waters stern first, according to Boston Globe Staff Writer Peter Schworm. However, the exact location of the submarine had remained a mystery for almost 70 years before the Mazraani-organized expedition discovered it earlier this week.
Their findings were officially announced on Friday, and while they would not disclose the exact location of the U-550, they told Schworm that it was completely intact and that they planned to return to the unspecified location in order to document their findings. They also said that they planned to contact the families of both the American and German soldiers involved in the battle that led to the U-550′s sinking.
“They’ve looked for it for over 20 years,” Mazraani told the Boston Globe. “It’s another World War II mystery solved.”

Volkswagen Shark Cage

Volkswagen is going to take a big bite out of the 25th anniversary of Shark Week on the Discovery Channel this year.

Instead of the usual jail-like shark cage, VW had a "Volkswagen Beetle Shark Observation Cage" created. It's looks like how it sounds, metal bars looking just like the outline of the new Beetle turned into a shark cage, complete with wheels.

As product plants on reality television goes, this one is about as blatant as it gets. But it's sure to bring smiles, from both viewers and sharks. You can't see it until Shark Week begins Aug. 12.
"Shark Week has a loyal and enthusiastic following of fans, and we're thrilled to partner with Discovery Channel on this 25th anniversary special," said Justin Osborne, general manager for marketing communications at Volkswagen of America.

To play up the connection, VW is offering a custom "Shark Bites" video playlist and timeline photos for its Facebook page.

Lobster Rescue

A massive 17-pound, 80-year-old lobster that could have ended up on a lunch plate recently got released back into Long Island Sound thanks to the crustacean compassion of Don MacKenzie of Niantic, Connecticut.
"This lobster has seen World War I, World War II, seen the landing on the moon and the Red Sox win the World Series, he's made it this far in life," MacKenzie told the local paper. "He deserves to live."
Local kids who had been flocking to the restaurant's tank to check out the impressive creature had named him "Larry." Word soon circulated that his number was up and had been ordered for a feast. MacKenzie swooped in, outbid the eater, and set Larry free while those local kids chanted "Let Larry Live!" The lobster was deposited in an area of the Long Island Sound where draggers can't drop their nets where he'll likely be able to live out the rest of his bottom feeding days in peace.

Respect the water

"Respect the ocean" was not only what my dive instructor so wisely told us, but it was always his overriding theme for any certifications or dives he led. I was a young teen and learned how right he was by making many of my own mistakes along the way, luckily with no serious consequences.

"Never swim alone" was what my mom, an avid swimmer who had won many meets in her day, would remind us as kids over and over again. For a young family growing up around the pool and the lake, it was wise advice.

I absolutely love the water and so my children have grown up very much around the water. I have always tried to teach them and ingrain in them a respect for the water. You can have all the fun in the world, be completely confident around the water, and enjoy it to its fullest, but only when you put safety first.

Never under estimate the power of the water or the conditions, know your limits, be knowledgeable and prepared mentally, follow the rules, and if you do get into trouble, never, ever, ever panic. In an emergency of any kind you need to think, and panic will kill you, especially on the water. Of course it’s always better to use the brain God gave you, be smart and avoid any problems to begin with.

As usual the family was up on the lake over the 4'th and whenever there’s a holiday you get all those people who either don’t know the boating laws, or simply don’t care to follow them. I did not hear of any serious problems on the lake yesterday, but here is an article about an unfortunate accident that happened on Long Island, NY and could have easily been completely avoided.

Summer Time is Seafood TimeClam Box, Ipswich If a debate rages on the North Shore over who has the best clams, the Clam Box seems to always be in the discussion. Housed in a structure that aims to appear like the container in which you might enjoy your meal, the portions at the Clam Box are often celebrated as generous. Be prepared to wait, as the shack can get slammed during busy summer hours. 246 High St., Ipswich, www.ipswichma.com/clambox/index.htm

Seafood is my favorite food. As such I've eaten a lot of seafood over the years and in a lot places. My favorite place EVER, is the Clam Box in Ipswich. It's the best, always fresh and I have never been disappointed by the quality or taste. Not just the fried stuff either, lobster roll, baked stuffed, etc.

Also if you time it right, you can get some great seafood and then head over to Cranes Beach (also in Ipswich) for an awesome picnic on the beach. Just perfect.

Here's a great link from the Boston Globe listing New England clam and lobster shacks.

Simply crazy, I love the ocean, and it looks so cool, but there is no way on God's good earth I would ever get out in those things. At least Kelly has enough brains not to.

The Aquatic Buddha Blog (Water Zen)

Surfers know it.

Sailors know it.

Divers know it.

Swimmers know it.

Anglers know it.

It’s that surreal supernatural oneness with the water. I’m not sure where it comes from. I know when I was a child I spent a lot of time in and around the water at the lake, at the ocean, and at the pool. My love of the water comes from no particular place, and is a blend of a variety of aquatic experiences.

This blog is dedicated to that, to the aquatic zen, the harmony that slows your heart beat and immerses you in peace when you connect with it.
